Last summer, I installed a 10-kWh home battery after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every evening. The system is paired with my rooftop solar panels, and the main reason I chose storage was simple: keep daytime solar power for the hours when my family actually uses it.
Before the battery, I sent a lot of cheap midday energy back to the grid and then bought electricity during the expensive evening peak. Now, the battery charges from the panels until it reaches about 95 percent, then discharges after dinner. Our dishwasher, refrigerator, lights, and heat-pump water heater run mostly on stored solar energy.
The clearest difference is between 5 and 9 p.m. On an ordinary weekday, the battery covers nearly all of our evening load. My utility app shows roughly 8 to 11 kWh less purchased from the grid each day. That sounds small, but over a month it has made a noticeable dent in the bill, especially during hot weather when air-conditioning used to dominate our peak-hour costs. My monthly bill fell from around $180 to $105 in the first full month, although solar production and rates vary. I am not pretending the battery erased the bill; it simply shifted when I buy power.
I also learned that battery settings matter more than I expected. During the first week, the battery stopped discharging at 60 percent overnight. I assumed something was broken, but the installer had left a backup reserve enabled. After lowering that reserve to 20 percent, the system used much more of its capacity while still keeping emergency power available. That small adjustment made the daily savings feel worthwhile.
I have become more deliberate: I run laundry and charge our electric bike in the afternoon, when solar generation is high. I call it flexibel solar.
