5kWh of usable battery storage changed how I use our solar system, especially after sunset. Before installing it, our panels sent extra power back to the grid during the day, but we still bought electricity in the evening. My main goal was simple: charge the lithium battery at lunchtime and run the house from it during peak hours.

The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to my existing 15kw inverter. Setup took most of a day, including the monitoring app and a reserve of 25 percent, so there would always be some power during an outage.

The savings are most noticeable on hot evenings. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, and the battery now covers cooking, lighting, Wi-Fi, and the heat-pump water heater between 4 and 9 p.m. In the first full month, our bill dropped from about $186 to $119, despite similar weather. That $67 difference is not life-changing, but it makes the solar battery payback feel tangible. I also noticed fewer sharp spikes in grid imports on the app. The house is quieter financially, if that makes sense: I am using more of my own solar generation instead of selling it cheaply and buying it back later.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its scheduled time. The app showed “waiting for solar,” even though the battery was nearly full. I restarted the gateway and checked the operating mode; the schedule had reverted to a default setting. Restoring my time-of-use profile fixed it immediately. Since then, I check firmware notes before changing anything.

It does not eliminate every electric bill, and cloudy weeks still require grid power, but the combination of solar panels, battery backup, and sensible reserve settings gives me predictable peak-hour savings every month for my family and monthly budget.
