X marks the spot on my electricity bill where the battery started paying for itself: the expensive evening hours. Before installing solar storage, I watched my grid usage jump after sunset, especially when we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and turned on the heat pump. My rooftop solar panels produced plenty at midday, but I was still buying power when rates were highest.

When our utility switches to peak rates, the inverter automatically powers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and induction cooktop from stored solar energy. I can see the power flow change in the app, which is oddly satisfying. My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 to $95-110, depending on weather and heating demand. The battery does not erase every charge; winter clouds still matter.
I did have one minor scare during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at night, although the app claimed it was available. I checked the obvious things first: backup reserve, time-of-use schedule, and Wi-Fi connection. The culprit was a firmware update that had reset my discharge schedule. After restoring the evening window, the system resumed normally. That small incident taught me to keep screenshots of settings and not assume automation is infallible when the grid gets unexpectedly expensive overnight.
