Solution Solar Inverter
Very little did I expect my solar battery to change our evenings as much as it has. Before installing a 10kWh home energy storage unit, I assumed the panels were the whole story. They produced plenty during the day, but we were still buying expensive electricity after dinner, when rates climbed.
Now the battery charges from excess solar around noon and runs the house through the peak period. I set it to reserve about 20% for outages, so there’s usually 8kWh available each evening. Our utility’s peak window is 4–9pm, and that’s when I notice the difference most. On sunny days, the battery carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, dishwasher, and sometimes the heat pump.
My bills fell from roughly $180 a month to $95 over the first full billing cycle, though winter is less impressive because of shorter days and heavier heating demand. I am not pretending the battery makes power free; the savings depend on sunshine, rates, and how carefully we use appliances. Still, seeing the inverter pull almost nothing from the grid during peak hours is genuinely satisfying.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The system stopped discharging at 35% even though the app showed normal operation. I discovered the backup reserve had accidentally been raised after a firmware update. Lowering it restored normal discharge that evening. I also keep an everstart 400w power inverter in the garage for camping and emergency phone charging; it is separate from the main solar inverter, but having a simple backup is reassuring.
After several months, my biggest lesson is simple: energy storage rewards midday appliance use.
