Very glad I installed a home solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My array is only 6.6kW, but adding a 14kWh LiFePO4 battery changed how I use it.

I built the pack around an eve 280ah 3.2v lifepo4 with a 16S BMS and inverter. The installation itself was straightforward and tidy.

The biggest everyday win is peak-hour bill savings. Before storage, our induction cooker, heat pump, and dishwasher all ran after dinner, when rates were highest. Now the battery starts discharging at 4 p.m. and usually carries the house until about 10 p.m. On sunny days, solar panels refill it by early afternoon, so I am using stored solar instead of grid power during those expensive hours. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $105 over the summer, despite similar air conditioning use.

I did have one small scare in the first week. The battery stopped discharging overnight because the BMS showed a low-temperature warning in the monitoring app. Nothing was actually wrong with the cells; the cabinet was sitting near an open vent and the temperature dipped below the inverter’s setting. I moved it away from the draft and adjusted the permitted charge temperature range with the installer’s guidance. Since then, the battery has been boringly dependable.

What I appreciate most is not having to think about it every day. The energy storage system quietly charges from surplus PV power, and the inverter switches to battery mode automatically. I still check the state of charge before a cloudy weekend, and I avoid running the clothes dryer late at night, but that is habit rather than hassle. For my home, this solar battery setup has made the time-of-use rate feel much less painful without changing our routine.
