Running our solar battery system through the first winter taught me more than the installer’s brochure ever could. I paired a growatt sph3600 inverter with a 5kWh lithium battery and kept our existing rooftop panels. The real highlight has been peak-hour savings, not the flashy app graphs.
Before storage, our electricity bill jumped whenever we cooked dinner, ran the heat pump, and charged phones and laptops after sunset. Now the battery usually fills between late morning and early afternoon. I set it to discharge from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., when our utility’s rates are highest. On an average weekday, it supplies roughly 4 kWh during that window. Our evening grid consumption fell noticeably, and my monthly bill dropped by about $35–$50, depending on weather. That is not a dramatic overnight payback, but it feels meaningful because the savings happen every day we are home.
The most useful practical moment came during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve earlier than usual, and the inverter briefly showed a communication warning. I checked the battery isolator, confirmed it was on, and restarted the system from the app. It reconnected within a minute and resumed charging the next morning. Since then, I have left the reserve at 20% rather than chasing every last kilowatt-hour.
I also appreciate how quiet the storage battery is. It sits in our garage, with no noticeable fan noise. The monitoring app is occasionally slow, but the energy meter tells the truth: solar power is covering more of our evening routine, and the grid is doing less work. For me, that simple shift is the whole point of home battery storage.
I’m still watching winter performance and battery degradation, but so far this system has made solar electricity feel much more usable after sunset on most nights now.
