Getting home energy storage installed changed the way I think about electricity bills, but the biggest surprise was how quickly I stopped caring about peak hours.
I went with an eg4 server rack battery, mounted in my garage beside the inverter. The setup was less dramatic than I expected. Our electrician added the battery disconnect, wired the communication cable, and configured the solar battery to charge from excess solar during the afternoon. I watched the app for the first few days like a teenager checking a new phone.
Before storage, I usually bought expensive grid power between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., especially after cooking dinner and running the heat pump. Now the battery carries most of that load. On sunny days, it reaches full charge by mid-afternoon, then discharges through the evening. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $45 to $70, depending on weather. That is not a magic zero-dollar bill, but it is a noticeable improvement, and I am using more of my own solar energy instead of selling it cheaply back to the utility.
The most useful feature has been the battery reserve setting. I keep about 25% in reserve for outages. We had a short neighborhood outage during a storm, and the lights flickered once before the inverter switched over. The refrigerator never stopped, although my Wi-Fi router rebooted and needed about a minute. That small event made the backup value feel real, rather than just something I was hoping to use someday.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery showed a communication warning after I restarted the router. I power-cycled the battery communication hub, checked the Ethernet lead, and restarted the inverter. The warning cleared in about ten minutes. Since then, the system has been boring in the best possible way.
