Solution Solar Battery
Replacing our old lead-acid backup bank with a growatt 40kw LiFePO4 Battery has made the biggest difference to how we use our solar system. Before the upgrade, our rooftop panels produced plenty of power during the day, but we still bought expensive electricity in the evening. The old batteries also seemed to lose capacity quickly, especially during colder months.
The new solar battery setup was more straightforward than I expected. The installer connected the battery to our hybrid inverter, checked the battery management system, and configured it to charge from solar first. We set the system to discharge during peak-rate hours, usually from about 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. That timing has been especially useful because our cooking, lighting, heating, and laundry overlap in the evening.
Our daily grid usage dropped noticeably. On sunny days, the house now runs almost entirely from solar energy and stored power until bedtime. Before installing the battery, our evening electricity use was often 8–12 kWh. Now, most of that comes from the battery instead of the utility. Our monthly bill has fallen by roughly 35–45%, although the exact savings depend on weather and how much heating we use. I also like seeing the real-time battery state of charge in the monitoring app rather than guessing what is happening.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging for an evening because the inverter’s reserve setting had somehow been raised to 30%. Once I lowered the backup reserve to 15%, normal operation returned. I now keep a higher reserve before storms, but otherwise let the battery handle peak-hour demand.
After several months, the main benefit is not just backup power. It is being able to use more of our own solar generation and avoid buying electricity when rates are highest. The LiFePO4 battery has been quiet, stable, and practical for everyday home energy storage.
