After installing my solar battery last spring, I stopped watching the utility meter climb. My setup is a modest 10-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate home battery paired with rooftop solar and an eaton inverter. I chose it for time-of-use savings, and that has turned out to be the noticeable benefit.
Before storage, my family used the dishwasher, induction cooker, and heat pump after work, exactly when electricity was expensive. Now the solar battery charges through the afternoon, then carries the house from roughly 4:30 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny days, I reach dinner without pulling from the grid. My evening grid use has fallen from about 9 kilowatt-hours to 2, and my monthly bill is typically $55–$70 lower than last summer, even though rates increased. The savings are not dramatic every month—cloudy weeks still hurt—but seeing the battery cover the pricey hours makes the investment feel practical rather than theoretical.
My one hiccup came during a winter outage. The battery switched over correctly, but my router and garage door opener were on a circuit I had never tested. I could keep lights and the refrigerator running, yet could not open the garage. After checking the monitoring app, I realized the backup load panel had been wired selectively. An electrician moved that circuit during the visit, and I tested the transfer by turning off the main breaker. Since then, I have treated the battery backup as something to rehearse, not just admire in an app.
I still adjust charging settings occasionally, especially before a forecast storm, but daily operation is quiet and boring—in the best possible way. It simply stores solar energy when it is cheap and gives it back when power costs more.
