Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh lifepo4 battery beside my inverter last spring, and the biggest difference has been how much less electricity I buy during peak hours. Before adding solar storage, my panels produced plenty during the day, but most of us were at work, so the extra power went back to the grid. In the evening, we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and charged devices using expensive utility electricity.
Now the battery charges from surplus solar around midday and covers our household from about 4 p.m. until bedtime. I usually set it to keep a 20% backup reserve, although I occasionally lower that during a cloudy week. On sunny days, our evening power comes almost entirely from stored solar energy. My monthly bill dropped by roughly $45 to $70, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. That is more noticeable than I expected, especially because the system is working hardest when electricity rates are highest.
The practical part I appreciate most is seeing the battery monitor on my phone. It shows solar production, home consumption, and the battery’s state of charge without making me guess. I did have one minor issue during the first month: the battery stopped discharging at night even though it showed plenty of capacity. After checking the inverter settings, I discovered the time-of-use schedule was still set to the installer’s default rate periods. I corrected the schedule, restarted the inverter, and everything worked normally.
I have not noticed any noise or maintenance beyond occasionally checking the connections and app alerts. During a short outage, the backup battery kept our refrigerator, internet router, lights, and a few outlets running, which made the purchase feel worthwhile beyond bill savings. For me, this solar battery setup is less about becoming completely independent and more about using my own solar power when my family actually needs it.
