Running my home on solar storage has changed the way I think about electricity, mostly because I can finally see where every kilowatt-hour goes. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, paired with rooftop panels and a growatt mppt charge controller. The installation took one long Saturday with an electrician, and the most useful change was setting the battery to charge from solar first, then discharge during expensive evening hours.
Before the battery, my house pulled heavily from the grid between 5 and 9 p.m., when cooking, laundry, and air conditioning all overlapped. After adding it, I usually reach dinner with 80 to 95 percent charge, and the battery carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the peak window. My utility bill dropped from about $185 a month to $92 on average, although weather and seasonal rates make that number move around. I am not pretending the battery erased my bill: cloudy weeks still require grid power, and the inverter loses a little energy during charging and conversion. Still, the evening savings are very noticeable.
My only real hiccup happened in July. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the obvious things first: breaker status, operating mode, and whether the utility had sent a demand-response signal. Everything looked normal. Eventually I found that a firmware update had changed the schedule from “self-consumption” to a backup reserve setting. Once I restored the schedule and rebooted the inverter, the system resumed within a few minutes. That small problem taught me not to panic at the first warning and to keep screenshots of my normal settings.
For me, the benefit is budgeting: I use more of my own solar power, and rate changes hurt less.
