dirt cheap lithium battery

I installed a 10-kWh lithium battery beside my inverter last spring; it wasn't a dirt cheap lithium battery, yet our evening rates were ridiculous. Before the solar battery, my rooftop panels made plenty of power during the day, but we sent much of it back to the grid and bought it back after dinner. That felt wasteful.

The installation proved less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and spent most afternoon checking settings in the monitoring app. I chose a conservative backup reserve of 20%, so the battery would not be completely drained during an outage. I also asked him to block grid charging, since I wanted the solar panels to do the work.

The first week was mostly about watching numbers. Each morning, the battery was usually around 25% after running the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, and a few lights overnight. By lunchtime, solar production had pushed it near full. At 4:00 p.m., the system automatically switched from exporting power to storing it. Once our peak rate began, I ran the dishwasher, washing machine, and induction cooktop from the battery instead of the grid.

The biggest change showed up on the bill. Before installation, my winter electric bills averaged about $210. Since adding storage, they have landed between $128 and $145, even though our usage has barely changed. The savings are not magical; they come from avoiding those expensive evening kilowatt-hours. My utility still charges a connection fee and credits exported solar at a poor rate, so self-consumption matters far more than I expected. In a typical month, the battery supplies roughly 240 kWh to the house, which feels much more useful than watching the meter run backward. That alone has made the solar investment feel worthwhile.
