Every evening after dinner, I check my solar battery monitor before deciding whether to run the dishwasher. I installed a deye sun 5kw hybrid inverter with about 10kWh of lithium storage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. The change has been less dramatic than a sales brochure suggests, but it is genuinely useful in my house.
During the first month, I watched the battery charge from rooftop solar during the afternoon and discharge between 4:30 and 9:30 p.m. That window used to be when our utility rate jumped, especially while my partner cooked and the heat pump ran. Now, the battery covers most of that demand. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $105, though weather and utility rates vary. The biggest saving is not a single spectacular day; it's the quiet reduction every night.
On cloudy days, I sometimes reach the backup reserve by dinner, so the system pulls from the grid earlier than I expected. I originally set the reserve at 20%, but after one storm caused a brief outage, I raised it to 35%. That choice costs a little extra in self-consumption, yet I sleep better knowing the refrigerator, aquarium pump, and internet router have a cushion. The automatic switchover was fast enough that I noticed only the microwave clock resetting.
Setup was straightforward for my installer, although the wall space beside the main panel was tighter than expected. We added a battery isolator, new conduit, and a monitoring dongle. I spent an evening learning the app because its graphs use terms like load, PV, and state of charge without much explanation. Once configured, the energy dashboard became handy: I can see whether appliances are using solar directly, stored power, or grid electricity. That clarity helps.
