Ever since I added a home battery to my rooftop solar system, evenings have felt noticeably less expensive. My main focus has been peak-hour savings, because our utility charges jump between 4 and 9 p.m. During those hours, the inverter draws from the lithium iron phosphate battery instead of the grid.
Before installation, I was paying roughly $210 a month in summer. After watching the battery discharge through dinner, laundry, and evening air-conditioning, my bills settled closer to $125. It is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but saving $80 or $90 repeatedly makes the purchase feel practical.
The deye smart meter was especially useful for understanding what was happening. I could see real-time import and export numbers rather than guessing from the inverter's app. That exposed one habit: our pool pump was starting just as the battery entered its reserve. I changed the schedule by an hour, and the battery stopped quietly refilling from the grid.
The second highlight has been everyday reliability. I keep a 20% backup reserve, which covers the refrigerator, internet, lights, and a few outlets during short outages. We had one storm-related interruption lasting about three hours. The transfer was quick enough that our router stayed online, although the microwave made me nervous when I tried it alongside the kettle. I now avoid stacking heavy appliances on backup, since battery capacity is not magic.
Maintenance has been minimal: I check state of charge, battery temperature, and monthly energy flows. In winter, cloudy days mean less charging, so I occasionally adjust the reserve upward. That small bit of attention matters more than I expected.
I cannot say the system eliminated my electricity bill, and upfront cost needs time to recover. But using stored solar energy during expensive hours has made our monthly spending steadier.
