I installed a lifepo4 battery bank last spring, mostly because our evening electricity bills kept climbing. The solar panels already covered most daytime use, but we were still buying expensive grid power between five and nine p.m. After the electrician finished the inverter and battery wiring, I changed the system settings to prioritize self consumption and reserve twenty percent for outages.
The difference showed up immediately. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge around two in the afternoon, then carries the house through dinner, laundry, and the nightly heat-pump cycle. Before storage, our utility meter raced whenever the sun went down. Now it barely moves until the battery is close to empty. This month, my grid usage fell from about 620 kilowatt-hours to 280, even though our routine did not change.
That translated to roughly $78 in savings on the latest bill, which is more noticeable than I expected. I especially like seeing the battery discharge during the expensive peak window instead of buying power at the highest rate.
One small annoyance appeared during a string of cloudy weather. The battery hit its reserve early, and the inverter started pulling from the grid sooner than I wanted. I first suspected a faulty solar charge controller, but the app showed normal operation; I had simply set the reserve too high.
Dropping that setting from thirty to twenty percent solved it, although I kept enough backup capacity for the refrigerator, router, and a few lights. That little adjustment taught me more about battery management than the installation manual did.
