Before that, my solar panels sent excess power to the grid during the afternoon, then I bought expensive electricity after dinner. Now the battery stores that surplus and runs most of the house through the peak period.

The difference shows up clearly on my bill. On sunny summer days, our battery reaches 95 or 100 percent by about 2 p.m. I set it to discharge from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., when rates are highest. The dishwasher, refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, lights, and heat-pump water heater run from stored solar energy. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $72 during the first full month, although weather and utility rates obviously affect the result. I am not pretending the battery paid for itself immediately, but seeing fewer peak-hour kilowatt-hours on the statement has been genuinely satisfying.

My only hiccup happened during a cloudy week. The battery state of charge dropped lower than expected, and the inverter stopped discharging at night. I initially blamed the solar battery, but the monitoring app showed a conservative reserve setting of 30 percent. I changed the backup reserve to 15 percent, and normal operation returned the next evening. I kept the higher reserve afterward when a storm was forecast, because backup power matters more to me than squeezing out every dollar.

So far, the LiFePO4 chemistry has been quiet and uneventful, which is exactly what I wanted. I check the battery monitor with my morning coffee, but I am not constantly adjusting it. The best part is practical: solar energy that used to disappear now covers our evening routine, and the system gives me a little confidence during outages without changing how we live. For me, that matters.
