Yesterday morning, my wife asked why the electricity bill had dropped so much, and honestly, the answer was our new solar energy storage battery.

We installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside the inverter in June, mainly to stop exporting cheap midday solar and buying expensive power during the evening peak. The setup was less dramatic than I expected. An electrician mounted the battery, connected the hybrid inverter, updated the monitoring app, and walked me through the shutdown switch. It took most of a day, and we had only a brief outage while the system was tested.

The biggest change is between 4:30 and 9:00 p.m. Before storage, I would come home, turn on the oven, heat dinner, and watch the meter spin while the grid supplied everything. Now the battery usually carries those loads. On a sunny day, our rooftop solar fills the battery by mid-afternoon, and the app shows almost no grid consumption through dinner. Our bill fell from roughly $185 to $112 in the first full month. It varies with weather, but peak-hour bill savings have been the most noticeable benefit. The battery has also kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights running during two short outages, which felt more valuable than the dollar savings.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app said the battery was “offline,” although the inverter showed normal operation. I checked the router, restarted the monitoring gateway, and waited ten minutes. It reconnected without needing a service visit. Since then, I glance at the state of charge once or twice a week rather than obsessing over it.

The battery uses a cylindrical lithium ion cell design, according to the manufacturer, but what matters to me is quiet operation, predictable nighttime coverage, and lower bills.
