Our solar battery has been running for about eight months, and the biggest change is how little attention I pay to peak-hour electricity prices now. Before installing it, my family used most of our power between 5 and 9 p.m., when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and cooling the house all overlapped. Our utility’s time-of-use rate made those hours surprisingly expensive.
The system is a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery connected to our rooftop solar panels through a hybrid inverter. During the day, solar power charges the battery after the house is covered. In the evening, the battery supplies power automatically. I usually set the reserve to 20 percent, so there is still some backup power available if the grid goes down.
Our monthly bill has dropped by roughly $45 to $70, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use. That saving is more noticeable than I expected because the battery is not trying to power everything indefinitely; it is mainly avoiding those costly evening hours. On sunny days, we often reach bedtime with plenty of stored energy left.
The installation itself was fairly smooth, although I learned that small details matter. The installer spent extra time labeling the battery cables and checking the copper lugs before commissioning the system. That gave me confidence, especially since I had read stories about loose connections causing nuisance shutdowns.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in the first month. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100 percent, but the inverter was not discharging after sunset. A reboot fixed it temporarily, but the installer later updated the firmware and changed one operating setting. It has behaved normally ever since.
For me, the value is not just lower bills. Having battery storage quietly shift solar energy into the evening, while providing backup power for the refrigerator and Wi-Fi, has made our home feel much less dependent on the grid.
