I installed a 13.5-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but the old setup sent surplus power away at noon and then pulled energy back during the 4-to-9 p.m. peak period. That timing was where I noticed the biggest difference.
The installation itself was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, added a hybrid inverter, and connected it to the existing solar array in one long day. I had to clear a wall and provide a new 240-volt circuit, but there was no rewiring drama. I did laugh when the electrician labeled the network cabinet beside it “cisco c9200 24,” which made my battery conversation sound like an enterprise data-center project.
Most importantly, I changed the battery schedule after watching my utility’s time-of-use rates for a week. It charges from solar first, then tops up only if rain is expected. Once the sun goes down, it powers the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, lights, and my home office. I specifically avoid charging my electric car during those expensive hours, because the battery cannot comfortably cover both overnight house loads and a car charge.
Before storage, my summer electric bills averaged about $185 a month. Over the last three comparable months, they averaged $92, despite similar weather and thermostat settings. The exact savings change with cloudy days, but seeing roughly $90 stay in my account each month makes the battery feel worthwhile.
I also like having backup power. During a short outage, the transfer was quick enough that the Wi-Fi, freezer, and lights never dropped. The app reported “grid unavailable” afterward, although everything was working. I restarted the inverter gateway, and the alert cleared by morning.
