Having lived with solar panels for three years, I finally added a 10kWh home battery last spring. My main reason was simple: evening electricity use was expensive, especially when the heat pump ran after the kids came home. Installation took one day, leaving only a small, visible wall patch afterward.
The battery charges from surplus solar around midday, then carries us through dinner, laundry, and the first part of night. Before it, I watched our smart meter climb during peak hours. Since installing it, grid consumption then has dropped sharply. On sunny days, we barely buy electricity after sunset now.
The biggest improvement is peak-hour bill savings. Our utility charges are highest between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, so battery storage lets us avoid that expensive window most evenings. Over six months, our bill fell about 35%, despite a hotter summer and more air-conditioning. I still check the monitoring app each morning.
One minor troubleshooting moment taught me not to panic. During a cloudy week, the app showed 100%, but the battery stopped discharging after sunset. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and found a firmware update had changed the reserve setting to 100%. Lowering it to 25% restored normal operation.
I now keep 30% reserve for outages, while allowing the rest for peak shaving. The battery has carried our refrigerator, internet router, lights, and several outlets through two short blackouts without drama. That practical backup matters more to me than flashy specifications or complicated features on a product page alone.
I also keep a small 12V setup in the shed for camping and emergency lighting. I use a charger for 12v lithium battery there, paired with a compact solar panel. It is separate from my home solar battery system, but the same safety habits apply: correct voltage, lithium profile, ventilation.
