After installing my home battery last summer, I stopped thinking of solar power as something that disappeared once the sun went down. The system is built around a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate pack, with a hybrid inverter and enough rooftop solar to charge it on most clear days. I chose a unit advertised with catl 100ah cells, mainly because the installer could explain the warranty without hand-waving.
The biggest practical change has been peak-hour bill savings. Before the battery, our dishwasher, induction cooktop, heat pump, and evening lights all pulled from the grid after dinner. Now the battery carries that load from about 4:30 p.m. until bedtime, when our utility rate is highest. I set a 20% reserve so it does not completely empty overnight, and the inverter automatically switches to grid if the weather is poor.
Our first full month showed a noticeable difference: the bill fell by roughly $46, even though we had several cloudy days and ran the heat pump more than usual. It is not a dramatic “free electricity” situation because the battery itself cost money, but the monthly reduction is consistent and easy to see in the utility app. I also like watching the state-of-charge graph climb during lunch and fall after sunset; it makes household energy use feel less mysterious.
Once, a loose network cable stopped discharge; reseating it fixed the warning.
After six months, the pack still reaches full on sunny days, runs quietly, and has not needed maintenance beyond checking connections and reviewing settings. I am especially glad I kept the setup simple: one battery, one inverter, and clear backup priorities rather than trying to power the entire house. For my family, the value is less dependence on expensive evening electricity and more predictable solar storage every day.
