3.2v 280ah

.After six months of watching my solar panels send cheap afternoon electricity back to the grid, I finally added a home battery this spring. My setup is fairly ordinary: eight rooftop panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 3.2v 280ah LiFePO4 battery bank in a small wall-mounted cabinet. I chose that capacity because it fit the spare utility closet without turning the garage into an equipment room.

The electrician finished the installation in an afternoon, but commissioning took longer than expected. We had to adjust the battery charge settings so it would use excess solar first, then charge from the grid only during my utility's cheap overnight window. That little change made the system behave much more predictably. I also asked the installer to show me the monitoring app rather than simply handing over the password. Being able to see state of charge, battery voltage, solar production, and household load has saved me several confused phone calls.

The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m., when cooking, laundry, and air conditioning used to overlap. Before storage, my evening grid use averaged around 9 kWh. Now the battery covers nearly all of it, usually reaching about 25 percent by bedtime. My electricity bill dropped from roughly $190 to $118 per month, although weather and seasonal rates obviously move those numbers around. The savings are not dramatic every day, but they are consistent, and I like using my own solar power after sunset instead of buying peak electricity. On sunny days, the solar battery is usually full before noon, so the dishwasher and washing machine run almost entirely from stored energy.

I had a scare. During a storm, the app showed “standby” instead of “discharging,” and the house pulled from the grid. I checked the breaker and discovered the battery had reached its reserve setting. Lowering reserve from 30 to 20 percent fixed it. I now keep 25 percent for outages. Storage has made bill calmer.
