Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Using my solar battery storage system every day has changed how I think about electricity bills. Before adding it, I sent excess rooftop solar back to the grid during the afternoon and then bought power back after dinner, when rates were highest. Now my 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery charges from midday production and carries the house through the expensive evening hours.
The biggest difference showed up on my first full month. My utility bill dropped from about $146 to $52, even though we had several cloudy days. The battery does not eliminate every charge, but it cuts the grid purchases that used to hurt most. I also programmed it to avoid charging from the grid, which keeps the savings honest.
Watching the app is oddly satisfying. I can see solar generation filling the battery, then notice the battery discharging when the oven, heat-pump water heater, and lights run together. On a typical weekday, my battery reaches 100 percent around 2 p.m. and falls to roughly 35% by bedtime. That is enough reserve for the refrigerator, internet equipment, and a few lights overnight.
My one frustrating moment came during a firmware update. The app showed the battery online, but it stopped discharging at sunset. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and waited ten minutes. The system recovered after I forced a refresh in the manufacturer’s app. I lost one evening of peak-hour savings, but there was no damage. Now I keep the inverter firmware current and glance at the error log once a week.
For anyone considering building your own lithium battery pack, I would urge caution. I chose a professionally assembled battery pack with certified protection and installation instead. The upfront cost was significant, but predictable performance and safety matter more to me than saving money on components.
