Running my home battery during the first full summer changed how I think about our solar system. I installed a growatt 12kw compatible LiFePO4 Battery in the garage in early May, mainly to avoid buying expensive evening electricity. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, connected the communication cable, and set the charge window in the app.
Our rooftop solar now charges the battery through the afternoon, and the battery takes over around 4 p.m., when our utility’s peak rate begins. That timing has made the biggest difference. Before storage, the house regularly pulled from the grid while we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and used the air conditioner. Now the battery carries those loads until about 10 p.m. On a typical clear day, I see roughly 8 to 10 kWh discharged overnight, and my evening grid use has dropped dramatically. Our monthly bill fell by about 35 percent compared with the same months last year, although weather and changing rates make that figure imperfect.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 100 percent, but it was not supplying power after sunset. I found that the backup/output setting had been disabled during a firmware update. Re-enabling it fixed the problem immediately. Since then, I have learned to check the inverter status rather than panic over one strange graph.
The LiFePO4 battery has been quiet, with no noticeable heat or smell, and the state-of-charge readings seem consistent. During a brief outage, it kept our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, a few lights, and my office running without interruption. It is not a whole-house generator, but that practical backup matters. For me, the best value is simple: solar energy I used to waste now covers the expensive hours, and the battery storage system does its job without daily fuss.
