Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Most evenings, my solar battery setup earns its keep after the sun goes down. I have eight rooftop panels feeding a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery, and the biggest difference is how little electricity I buy during expensive peak hours. Before installing storage, my air conditioner, refrigerator, and induction cooker all ran from the grid after dinner. Now I usually use stored solar power from 5pm until bedtime, when the tariff drops again.
My monthly bill used to hover around $145 during summer. Over the last three summer months, it averaged around $93. That’s roughly $52 saved each month, and I notice the improvement most on hot days. The battery rarely reaches empty because I reserve 20% capacity for outages. That reserve has already kept our Wi-Fi, lights, and freezer running through two short blackouts.
The setup was not completely plug-and-play. My installer had to adjust the inverter charge schedule so it would prioritize solar charging instead of pulling from the grid. I also spent an evening checking connections and reading the battery monitoring app. Seeing the state of charge fall steadily while the house ran normally was surprisingly satisfying.
One small scare happened in January. The app showed a communication warning, and the battery stopped discharging. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the cable between the CAN port and battery, and restarted the system. The warning disappeared after about ten minutes. My battery uses a bms 4s 200a unit, so I initially worried the protection board had tripped, but the log showed only a temporary communication dropout.
Since then, the solar storage has been boring in the best way. I do not obsess over every percentage anymore. I simply check the charge level with coffee, run the dishwasher before the evening peak, and let the battery handle the rest.
