Early last summer, I switched on my home battery after months of watching evening electricity rates eat into the value of my rooftop solar. The installation was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set it to charge from solar during the day and discharge during peak hours.
The first week was the real test. Our cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning usually overlap between 5 and 9 p.m., exactly when power costs the most. Before storage, the solar panels stopped helping once the sun went down. Now the battery carries most of that load. On a typical summer day, it supplies 6 to 8 kWh overnight and through the evening, trimming my daily bill by roughly $2 to $4. That does not sound huge, but it adds up to around $75 to $95 per month here, especially when the heat pump is running.

In actual use, I appreciate the boring things most: quiet operation, a clear state-of-charge display, and predictable backup power. During one cloudy spell, I noticed the battery was stopping at 92% instead of reaching its normal 100%. I initially assumed something was wrong, but the monitoring app showed the system had reduced charging to protect the pack because temperatures in the garage had fallen sharply. Once the room warmed up, charging returned to normal.
The battery has not eliminated my electric bill, and I still pull grid power on rainy days. However, shifting solar energy into peak hours has made the panels more valuable. For me, reliable battery storage and load scheduling have mattered more than chasing independence percentage.
