Solution Solar Battery
After our electricity bills jumped again last summer, I finally bought a home solar battery. It is a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate unit connected to my rooftop solar inverter. I chose it mainly as a battery back up for house, but the everyday savings have been more noticeable than the emergency backup. Installation took one afternoon. The electrician mounted it in the garage, ran conduit, and set the app to prioritize self-consumption.
My utility charges much more between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., so the battery now fills during sunny hours and carries the house through that expensive window. Before storage, I would export cheap afternoon solar for a small credit, then buy power back at dinner time. Now the battery runs our refrigerator, well pump, Wi-Fi, lights, and occasionally the induction cooktop. On a weekday, I see roughly 6 to 8 fewer grid kilowatt-hours on the bill. That works out to about $2 to $3 saved per day, or close to $75 in a month.
I did have one troubleshooting moment after a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve setting earlier than expected, and the inverter displayed a warning. I assumed something had failed, but the app revealed the battery was protecting its reserve because my heat pump had run longer than usual. I lowered the reserve from 30 percent to 20 percent, and the warning disappeared after a reset. Since then, I have left that setting alone during winter and increased it before storms.
Overall, I am glad I installed solar battery storage. It has not eliminated my bill, and I still watch cloudy weather and rates. However, it has made our solar panels much more useful and reduced expensive evening consumption without changing our routine. For me, that practical improvement matters more than having a perfectly off-grid system.
