After moving into our house last year, I finally stopped guessing whether solar batteries were worth the expense. My rooftop solar panels produced plenty at midday, but we were still buying expensive electricity after dinner. The setup took most of a Saturday. The electrician mounted the inverter and battery in a cool utility room, then connected the system to my existing solar panels. Watching the app show the battery charging at 2 p.m. felt satisfying; before, I had watched sunlight disappear unused.

The biggest difference appears between 5 and 9 p.m. My battery runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi router, and usually the dishwasher. On sunny days, it reaches 100% by late afternoon. Then I switch the house to battery power through the inverter, and grid consumption drops sharply during peak hours. My monthly bill fell from roughly €118 to €76 in the first full month. It varies with weather—December was closer to €94—but the savings are still obvious.

One small annoyance came during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve earlier than expected, and the app briefly showed “communication lost.” I checked the breaker, restarted the Wi-Fi gateway, and the status returned within ten minutes. It turned out the gateway had connected to our old router after a network name change. Since then, I have kept the inverter on a wired connection.

I am not pretending this battery makes electricity free. It cost about €3,400 installed, so payback will take several years. Still, I like having control over when I use stored solar energy. I also appreciate the backup during brief outages; even a short blackout no longer resets the router or leaves us in darkness.
