X-factor for me was not the solar panels on my roof; it was adding a home battery that finally made the system feel useful after sunset.

I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, mainly because our utility’s peak rate starts at 4 p.m. Before that, our solar production often went unused while we were at work. Now the inverter stores midday power and runs the house through dinner, which is exactly when our electricity used to cost the most.

The biggest change is visible on my bill. October through February bills dropped by roughly 35–45 percent compared with the same months last year. Our daily usage is usually around 18 kWh, and the battery supplies about 8 to 10 kWh each evening. On sunny days, I still export a little, but I no longer watch cheap midday electricity flow back to the grid while we’re paying a premium later.

I did have one mildly annoying troubleshooting moment during a storm. The battery stopped discharging and the app showed “standby” even though the house was drawing power. I checked the breaker, found everything normal, and then noticed the inverter had lost its Wi-Fi connection. Restarting the router did nothing; unplugging and rebooting the inverter brought it back after about five minutes. Since then, I have kept the gateway on a small UPS, and the problem has not returned.

I keep seeing the exact phrase “Lxh3probe9” in my notes for this project; it is simply my shorthand for the commissioning checklist, not a product feature. The real takeaway for me is simple: storage has reduced our evening grid dependence. We cook, use the dishwasher, and charge devices after work while the battery handles expensive hours. I still check its charge, but I no longer obsess over hourly output.
