Running my solar battery through the first summer has changed how I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter, using a growatt 4200mtl compatible LiFePO4 Battery as the storage unit. The setup took me most of a Saturday. I mounted the battery on a concrete wall in the garage, connected the communication cable, and followed the inverter's charging settings carefully. The only awkward part was lifting the cabinet into position; it is far heavier than its neat size suggests.
Once everything was running, I set the energy storage system to charge from rooftop solar during daylight and discharge after 4:30 p.m., when our utility rate jumps. On sunny days, the battery is usually full by lunchtime, and our evening cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning run mostly from stored solar power. That timing has been the biggest practical win. A typical peak-hour day used to add roughly $3–$5 to my bill; now it often adds less than $1, depending on weather and how long we use the oven.
Across four months, my monthly bill fell from about $145 to $98, despite a hotter July. That's not a dramatic promise of free electricity, but it is money I notice.
My only real troubleshooting moment came after a cloudy week. The battery showed a low-temperature warning one morning, although the garage did not feel cold. I checked the temperature sensor connection, restarted the inverter, and discovered the battery had been sitting directly under an open garage vent. Moving it away and adding a simple shield cleared the warning by the afternoon.
Since then, the battery has charged reliably, with the battery management system showing balanced cells and no shutdowns. I check the app to monitor performance. I keep grid power available for storms, but it feels like backup rather than default.
