I installed my home battery last spring, mainly because our electricity rates jump sharply between 4 and 9 p.m. My rooftop solar panels usually produce plenty during the afternoon, but without storage, we were sending that power back to the grid and buying it back after dinner.
The installer recommended a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and the phrase Lithium battery solutions suddenly felt less like marketing and more like something I could actually use every day.
Setup was less disruptive than expected. They mounted the cabinet in our garage, added a backup load panel, and configured the app to charge from solar first. The crew finished in one day, although I spent that evening checking whether the battery was actually filling. Seeing the charge level climb from 42 percent to 96 percent before sunset was oddly satisfying.
The biggest difference appears on weekdays. Our house uses the stored energy for cooking, laundry, and the heat pump during peak hours. Before the battery, our highest monthly bill was about $238. Since installation, bills have landed between $118 and $146, even though our overall usage has not changed much. That is roughly $90 saved in a typical month, which feels more meaningful than the sales estimate because I can see the savings on an actual bill.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 100 percent, but the house was still drawing from the grid. I checked the settings and found backup reserve mode had been switched on, keeping 30 percent untouched. Once I lowered that reserve temporarily, the battery began covering the evening load normally. I raised the reserve again afterward, since outages are uncommon here but I want refrigeration and internet protected.
That peace matters.
