I installed my LiFePO4 DIY battery box last spring to cut evening peak purchases. My rooftop solar system is only 6 kW, and before the battery I watched the inverter shut down at sunset just as cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning started. That timing was frustrating.

The setup took me a weekend. I mounted the battery cabinet in my garage, connected a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery bank to the hybrid inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar first, then discharge between 4 and 9 p.m. I am comfortable with basic wiring, but I still used an electrician for the final connections and inspection. The useful part was configuring a reserve level. I keep 25% in reserve, so a cloudy morning or brief outage does not leave the house dependent on the grid.

The savings were noticeable immediately. My utility rate jumps to about 32 cents per kWh at peak time, while overnight power is closer to 14 cents. On sunny days, the solar battery stores 7 to 8 kWh after the house has finished using daytime production. By bedtime, it has covered the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and most of our cooking load. My monthly bill fell from about $210 to $135 in the first comparable month, although weather and air-conditioning make every month different. I am not claiming the battery pays for itself overnight, but the peak-hour bill reduction is real.

One troubleshooting moment happened when the battery stopped discharging at 20% instead of my 25%. The monitoring app showed a firmware update had reset the minimum state of charge. I restored the setting, restarted the inverter, and everything returned to normal in ten minutes.

After several months, my favorite benefit is simple: I use more of my own solar energy, and I no longer feel that evening rate increase quite so sharply.
