Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
2 months ago, I added a lithium battery to my rooftop solar setup, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My system is fairly modest: six panels, a hybrid inverter, and one 12v 100ah lithium ion battery south africa unit connected through a properly sized battery bank and protection equipment.
The biggest difference has been between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before storage, we would return home, switch on lights, television, Wi-Fi, and the kettle, and immediately start drawing costly grid power. Now the solar battery stores daytime production and carries most of our normal evening load. I still use the grid for the oven and geyser when necessary, but our monthly bill has dropped by roughly 25 to 35 percent, depending on cloudy weather and how much cooking we do.
I was initially worried about battery capacity. A 100Ah battery sounds substantial, but usable energy depends on voltage, depth of discharge, inverter losses, and the actual household load. I learned quickly that running a heater from a small solar power storage system is unrealistic. Lights, a router, television, laptops, and a fridge are much more suitable loads.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging after I changed a setting in the solar inverter. The battery management system had disconnected it because the charging voltage was outside its safe range. After restoring the recommended lithium battery settings and restarting the inverter, charging resumed normally. That experience made me appreciate that installation quality matters as much as the battery itself.
So far, the solar energy storage system has been quiet, automatic, and more useful than I expected. I check the monitoring app most evenings, mostly out of curiosity. For me, the practical win is not complete energy independence; it is using my own stored solar power when electricity is most expensive. That alone has made the battery investment feel worthwhile.
