Kicking off my solar battery setup with an 8kw deye inverter was less intimidating than I expected. I already had rooftop solar, but before adding storage, I watched excess power disappear into the grid during the afternoon and then bought electricity back after dinner. That daily swing was the main reason I invested.

The installation took most of a day. My installer mounted the lithium battery in the garage, close to the inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar first. I chose a simple time-of-use schedule: discharge between 4pm and 9pm, then keep a reserve overnight. The app took me a few evenings to understand, especially the difference between battery percentage and available backup capacity, and now I check it daily.

The change is my evening consumption. We cook around 6pm, run the dishwasher later, and previously those were my most expensive hours. With the battery covering that period, my grid import dropped sharply. On sunny days, the battery reaches full before lunch and usually carries us through bedtime. In the first month, my bill fell by roughly 35% compared with the same month last year, though I am careful not to claim that result every month because cloudy weather and higher heating use make a difference.

I did have a troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery as offline even though the inverter screen looked normal. I power-cycled the communications dongle, waited ten minutes, and it reconnected. Since then I have left updates to my installer unless everything is working properly.

For me, the benefit is not total energy independence but using my own solar electricity when it matters most. The lithium battery has made the system feel more predictable, and I am using less grid power without changing our routine.
