Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10kWh home battery last spring after watching my evening electricity bills climb. My rooftop solar system was already producing more than we used at lunchtime, but without storage I was sending that excess power back to the grid and buying electricity again after dinner.
The installation took most of a day. The crew mounted the lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage, next to the hybrid inverter, and connected it to the existing solar array. I had expected a mess, but the wiring was tidy and the app showed the battery charging before they left. My only complaint was that the setup instructions assumed I already understood terms like state of charge and backup reserve.
The biggest difference appears during peak hours. I set the battery to charge from solar and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On sunny days, it runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat pump for several hours. My utility bill has dropped from roughly $180 a month to around $95, even though our household habits have not changed. The savings are most noticeable on hot afternoons, when the air conditioner would otherwise pull expensive grid power. It is not a dramatic overnight miracle, but seeing the battery percentage fall instead of the electric meter racing feels satisfying.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the app reported “battery unavailable,” even though the inverter was still online. I checked the disconnect switch, confirmed the backup outlet had power, and restarted the system through the app. It recovered after about ten minutes. Support later explained that the battery had briefly entered a protection mode because of low solar input. Since then, it has behaved normally.
I appreciate the backup power and steadier evening bills; storage makes my solar more useful.
