8 months ago, I added a 48v 280ah lifepo4 battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful.
Before that, our panels covered daytime use, but we still bought expensive power after sunset and during cloudy mornings. The installer mounted the battery in a utility room beside the inverter and connected it to the existing monitoring app. The physical installation took most of one day. I watched the electrician configure charge limits and backup settings, then tested the transfer by switching off grid power. That test was reassuring: the lights flickered briefly, and the refrigerator never stopped.
My favorite change is how deliberately boring the battery has made our evenings. The panels charge it through the afternoon, and around four, the inverter shifts the house to stored solar energy. We run the dishwasher, induction cooktop, television, and heat pump without pulling much from the utility.
On my latest bill, peak hour consumption dropped from roughly 11 kWh to about 2 kWh. That difference saved me about $18 for the month, which is not dramatic alone, but it adds up. With fixed charges included, my total bill was $71 instead of the usual $96. The battery still had plenty of capacity after midnight, especially on sunny days.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during a rainy week. The battery showed a low state of charge warning even though the app reported solar input. I checked the cables, restarted the inverter communication, and discovered the app had stopped refreshing, not the battery. After reconnecting the WiFi dongle, readings returned and the warning cleared.
Since then, the system has been quiet and predictable. I like that this LiFePO4 battery does not require daily attention; I check state of charge before bed and let the solar controller do its job.
