Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running a 10 kWh solar battery at home has changed the way I use electricity. Before installing it, my rooftop solar panels exported most of their afternoon power, while I bought electricity back from the grid after dinner. That felt wasteful, especially during expensive peak hours.
The installation itself was fairly painless. My installer fitted a hybrid inverter, a wall-mounted lithium battery, and a "growatt single phase energy meter" to monitor imports and exports. The app took a day or two to understand, but I now check the state of charge more than I expected. Seeing the battery fill from solar in the afternoon is oddly satisfying.
My biggest improvement is peak-hour bill savings. I programmed the battery to charge from solar and discharge between 4 pm and 9 pm. That covers cooking, lights, television, dishwasher, and the heat-pump water heater on most evenings. In the first full month, my grid consumption dropped by roughly 55 percent, and my bill fell from about $180 to $82. Results vary with weather and household habits, but that was a noticeable difference immediately.
I also appreciate the quiet backup during short outages. When the grid went down one rainy evening, the battery kept our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights running. It did not power the whole house, which was a useful reality check, but avoiding spoiled food and a dark kitchen was worth it.
My only frustrating moment came after a firmware update. The inverter briefly stopped sending correct readings to the monitoring app, so the battery appeared stuck at 47 percent. The system was actually working; the meter data just lagged. I restarted the gateway and contacted support, and normal readings returned later that evening. Since then, I have left automatic settings alone. For me, reliable savings matter more than chasing maximum independence.
