Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Our solar battery has been running for six months, and the biggest difference is what happens between 4 and 9 p.m. Before installation, our house pulled heavily from the grid as soon as the sun went down. That was when our time-of-use rate jumped. Now the lithium battery charges from the rooftop panels during the afternoon and carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine through the expensive hours.
I chose a 5 kWh solar energy storage unit because I wanted useful bill savings without filling an entire garage wall. The system also includes a power inverter 3000w, which has handled my household loads comfortably. I do pay attention when running the microwave and kettle together, but I have not seen the inverter struggle with use. On a typical sunny day, the battery reaches full charge around 2 or 3 p.m. and still has 25 to 35 percent left when we go to bed.
Our electricity bill has fallen by about 30 percent, though the savings vary with weather. In the first month, I expected more because cloudy days left the battery charging from the grid, which was not ideal. I changed the charging schedule in the monitoring app so it only tops up overnight when the cheaper rate applies. That adjustment made the solar battery much more useful.
The hiccup was a warning saying “battery communication lost” after an outage. I turned off the battery isolator, waited a minute, and restarted the system as the installer instructed. It came back online without losing the charge. Since then, I check the app weekly.
For me, the real benefit is not energy independence; it is avoiding the daily peak-rate bite. The battery quietly does its job, and I notice that most when the monthly bill arrives.
