8 months ago, I added a 280ah lifepo4 lithium ion battery to my rooftop solar setup, mainly to avoid buying expensive evening electricity. My panels already produced plenty during the day, but after dinner I still pulled power from the grid during peak hours. The battery felt more practical than adding panels.
An electrician mounted it in my garage beside the hybrid inverter. Installation took a morning, although commissioning slowed down while the inverter firmware was updated. We set the home energy storage system to charge from solar first and discharge from 4 to 9 p.m. I kept a 20 percent reserve for outages. After that, the solar battery mostly ran quietly in the background.
The first full month showed why I liked it. Our evening usage includes cooking, the dishwasher, television, and a small heat pump. Previously, those hours added about $70 to our electric bill. With the battery covering most of that window, the bill fell to roughly $31 despite similar weather and routines. My utility plan changes monthly, so savings vary, but I usually save $35 to $50 during the brighter season. On cloudy weeks, savings are smaller, though the battery still shifts some daytime solar into dinner time.
I did have one troubleshooting moment in January. The battery stopped discharging at its scheduled time, and I noticed the house quietly switching to grid power. The monitoring app showed a temperature warning because the garage was near freezing. I warmed the room, restarted the inverter, and updated the settings. It resumed that evening. Since then, I keep a cheap temperature sensor nearby and avoid blocking the vents.
It is not glamorous, but it is useful. I rarely think about the battery now; I check its state of charge with coffee and let the solar inverter handle the rest.
