I installed my first home solar battery last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. The panels already covered most daytime use, but we were still buying expensive grid power between 4 and 9 p.m. My goal was simple: store solar energy at lunchtime and use it after dinner instead of treating the battery as an emergency-only backup.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery with a hybrid inverter and separate micro inverter units on the roof. The installation took most of a day. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, ran conduit along one wall, and showed me how to set the reserve percentage in the monitoring app. I left the backup reserve at 25 percent, which feels like a sensible compromise during outages.
The first week was mostly about watching graphs obsessively. On a clear day, the battery reached full by about 2:30, then carried our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and dishwasher through the evening. Before storage, our utility bill averaged around $210 per month in summer. After adding the solar battery, the first comparable bill was $128, even though we used the air conditioner frequently. The bigger surprise was the peak-hour reduction: the app showed the battery supplying roughly 6–8 kWh between 5 and 9 p.m. most nights. That worked out to roughly $45–$60 in monthly savings, depending on weather and laundry habits.
I did have a minor troubleshooting moment. During a heatwave, the battery stopped discharging at 6:15 p.m., and I initially assumed something had failed. The monitoring app showed “standby,” though the charge level was 72 percent. After checking the manual, I found the inverter had switched to a temperature-protection mode because the garage was unusually hot. I opened the side door and cleared the ventilation area; discharge resumed twenty minutes later.
