Solution Solar Battery
Charging our home battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a schneider hybrid inverter with a 10-kWh lithium battery last spring, mainly because our utility charges much more from 4:00-9:00pm. Before that, I watched the solar panels export cheap afternoon power while we cooked, ran the dishwasher, and cooled the house during the expensive hours. Now the battery stores that surplus and carries us through the evening.
Once commissioned, I used the app to set a reserve level. I keep 25% for outages, although I have only needed it once.
The savings show up most clearly on hot weekdays. In June, my evening grid use fell from roughly 18 kilowatt-hours to 4. My bill dropped by about $68, even though we used the air conditioner more. The battery usually begins charging by noon and reaches full before dinner. At 6:00pm, I can run the induction cooktop, water heater, and laundry without immediately buying peak-rate electricity. That feels more satisfying than simply watching solar production on a monitoring screen.
I did have one small scare during our first summer storm. I checked the breaker, found it had tripped after a brief storm, and reset it following the manual’s instructions. The system came back online within ten minutes, and the stored energy was still there. I later tightened the outdoor conduit cover with the installer, since moisture had gotten into the disconnect.
I am not pretending the battery makes electricity free. There are conversion losses, a monthly connection charge, and cloudy stretches. Still, the combination of rooftop solar, load shifting, and backup power has made our energy costs steadier. For me, the best benefit is practical: I use my own daytime solar after dark, and peak pricing no longer dictates when our family can cook or relax.
