I installed a home solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My setup is a 10 kWh lithium phosphate iron battery connected to a 6 kW hybrid inverter and rooftop solar panels. The installation took most of a day. The electrician mounted the battery in my garage, added a dedicated breaker, and walked me through the monitoring app. I was nervous about changing settings, but the default schedule worked surprisingly well.
During sunny hours, the panels power the house first and send leftover energy into battery storage. Around 4 p.m., when my utility’s peak rate begins, the battery takes over. That timing has made the biggest difference to my bill. Before storage, our oven, heat pump, and water heater regularly pushed us into the expensive evening period. Now the battery supplies most of that usage until about 9 p.m. On a typical summer month, my electricity bill has fallen by roughly 35 percent compared with the previous year, even though our household habits have not changed much.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After two cloudy days, the battery reached its reserve level and stopped discharging. I initially thought something had failed, but the app showed the state of charge sitting at the backup-reserve setting. I lowered that reserve from 30 percent to 20 percent, and normal operation returned. I left enough capacity for an outage because keeping the refrigerator, internet equipment, and a few lights running matters more to me than squeezing out every last dollar.
The system is quiet, and I rarely think about it now. I check the solar battery app once or twice a week, mostly out of curiosity. I still draw some grid power, especially in winter, but shifting solar energy into peak hours has made the investment feel practical rather than futuristic. My only advice is to study your utility’s rate schedule before choosing battery capacity; that mattered more for my savings than chasing the largest battery I could afford.
