Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed my solar battery system last spring after getting tired of watching evening electricity rates eat into our budget. The setup centers on a victron multiplus compact inverter-charger, paired with 10 kWh of lithium iron phosphate storage and 4.8 kW of rooftop solar.
I hired an electrician for the final wiring, but I did the wall mounting and cable labeling myself. That part took most of a Saturday; the battery cabinet was heavier than expected, and moving it through our narrow side gate was genuinely stressful.
The biggest difference is what happens between 4 and 9 p.m. Our solar panels charge the battery during the day, then the inverter runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television from stored power after sunset. Before installing storage, I was usually pulling from the grid during those expensive peak hours. Now the utility meter barely moves unless we run the oven or clothes dryer.
On a typical sunny month, my electricity bill fell from roughly $210 to $125. The exact savings vary with weather and our heat-pump use, but avoiding peak pricing is clearly doing most of the work. I also like seeing the battery state of charge each morning instead of guessing whether we have enough backup power.
My one minor troubleshooting moment came during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve setting earlier than I expected, and the system switched to grid power. I initially thought something had failed, but the monitoring app showed the panels simply had not produced enough. I lowered our evening loads for two nights and raised the reserve slightly. No technician visit was needed.
That experience taught me not to treat a solar battery like an unlimited generator. For me, the value is not total energy independence. It means quieter evenings, predictable savings, and confidence during short outages. I would install storage again without hesitation.
