Solution Solar Inverter
2am, wake-ups used to mean my refrigerator and router were still running during another power cut. That changed after I added a small solar battery storage setup beside my inverter.
I started with one 12v lithium battery 20ah whit charger for testing, then connected it to a 200-watt solar panel and charge controller. The battery is not large, but it handles my modem, lights, and phone charging surprisingly well.
The biggest difference shows up on my electricity bill. Before storage, peak-hour use after dinner regularly pushed my monthly bill near $190. Now the controller charges the battery through the afternoon, and I switch the modem, lights, and television over after sunset. Last month was $137, despite similar weather and more time at home. That $53 reduction is not entirely from the battery—my utility rate changed slightly—but I can clearly see fewer kilowatt-hours during expensive hours in the monitoring app.
The setup was mostly easy. I mounted the panel on a sunny shed roof, ran fused cable to the charge controller, and kept the battery in a ventilated utility room. My only headache came during the first week, when the battery stopped charging. I eventually found one loose MC4 connector. After reseating it and tightening the terminals, the solar charging returned immediately. I also added a low-voltage cutoff, because I did not want to drain the lithium battery completely.
I am realistic about its limits. It cannot run my microwave or washing machine for long, and cloudy days require more grid power. Still, it gives me useful backup protection and makes solar power more practical instead of sending every sunny afternoon watt straight to the grid. My next upgrade will probably be a larger battery bank, but for now this modest solar battery system is paying for itself slowly.
