My solar battery has changed the way I use electricity, but the biggest difference has been during peak hours. I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery alongside my rooftop solar panels last spring, mainly because our evening power rates had become painful.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. A local installer mounted the inverter and battery in my garage, then connected the system to the smartmeter deye monitoring arrangement. I spent the first evening checking the app every few minutes, watching solar production charge the battery to 100 percent. By dinner time, the house was running from stored energy rather than pulling from the grid.
The real win showed up on my bill. Before storage, my household used expensive grid electricity from about 4:30 p.m. until bedtime, especially when cooking and running the heat pump together. Now I set the battery to discharge through that window. My monthly bill dropped by roughly 30 percent, or around $45 to $60 depending on weather.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 20 percent, although the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially thought the inverter had failed. After checking the settings, I found I had accidentally enabled a backup reserve for an upcoming outage. Disabling that setting fixed everything immediately. That scare taught me to understand the battery management settings instead of blaming the equipment.
I still keep a reserve because outages do happen here, but I am more relaxed about using solar power overnight. The system is not magic—rainy days still require grid electricity, and I occasionally adjust charging schedules when rates change. Still, the combination of solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and home battery storage has made our energy use much more predictable.
