Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Last spring, I added a home battery to my rooftop solar system because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings. During the day, solar panels usually cover the refrigerator, heat pump, and washing machine, but once the sun went down, I was buying expensive grid power. The battery has changed that routine more than I expected.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, installed in the garage by a solar installer. These electricity storage batteries now run our lights, internet, refrigerator, and heat pump overnight. It charges from solar in the afternoon and discharges after dinner. I did not have to change our habits; the system handles everything automatically through the hybrid inverter and monitoring app.
The clearest difference is on weekdays. Before installing the battery, my utility bill often included a noticeable peak-hour surcharge. Now I set the battery to reserve 25% for outages and use the rest between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. My monthly bill dropped by roughly $45–$70, depending on weather. It is not a dramatic “zero bill” claim, but the savings are steady and easy to see. On sunny days, the app shows almost no grid import during those peak hours, which is satisfying.
I did have one scare. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging one evening. The app showed “standby,” although the charge level was 68%. I power-cycled the inverter according to the installer’s instructions, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The system resumed within ten minutes. Since then, I have left automatic updates enabled but check the app the next morning. It has been reliable since that hiccup.
For me, the best part is not backup during a storm, although that is reassuring. It is the quieter feeling of using solar energy after sunset. I am still connected to the grid, but my solar battery makes evening electricity cheaper and gives the panels more value every day.
