2am was the first time I really appreciated our solar battery. During a summer heatwave, the house stayed quiet, but the grid was pulling expensive electricity for air conditioning. Instead of watching the meter climb, I woke to the steady hum of our energy storage system and saw the battery covering nearly everything.
We installed a 12kw growatt inverter with a 13.5kWh lithium battery and twelve rooftop panels. Setup took one long day. The wiring was tidy, and the monitoring app started showing solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption almost immediately. I did spend the evening changing reserve settings because the default 20% backup level felt too low for our tastes. I settled on 30%, enough for the refrigerator, lights, and internet during an outage.
The biggest difference is peak-hour bill savings. I charge the home battery from rooftop solar through the afternoon, then let it run the dishwasher, heat pump, and cooking after dinner. Before installation, our utility company charged much more between 4pm and 9pm. Our first full month with battery storage lowered the bill by about $62, despite similar weather and usage. In spring, the saving is closer to $35, but that still feels worthwhile.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery as offline after a router update. The inverter was still working, so the house never lost power, but remote monitoring disappeared. I restarted the Wi-Fi dongle, waited five minutes, and the readings returned. Since then, I have kept the inverter and router on a small backup circuit.
This system has not eliminated my electricity bill, and cloudy days still require grid power. However, watching solar energy flow into the battery and then cover evening demand makes consumption feel much more deliberate. It fits us.
