6 months ago, I added a 10 kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. The installation was less dramatic than I expected: the electrician mounted the inverter beside my existing breaker panel, connected the battery, and walked me through the monitoring app. My unit uses 26650 cells, and I chose it because the quoted cycle life and usable capacity seemed sensible for my household, not because I wanted a complicated off-grid setup.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Before storage, our heat pump, cooking, and laundry pushed us into the utility’s peak period. Now solar charges the battery during the afternoon, and the battery supplies the house after sunset. On an average summer day, I used to see roughly $4 to $6 in peak charges; lately that portion is usually under a dollar. Across one full billing cycle, my bill fell from $168 to $94, although weather and changing rates obviously affect the comparison. I also keep a small reserve for outages, so the battery does not empty completely.
My one annoying moment came during a cloudy weekend. The app showed the battery at 18 percent, but the house was still drawing grid power even though the battery had a discharge schedule. I checked the settings and found that a firmware update had reset my time-of-use window. After restoring the 4 p.m. start time and rebooting the gateway, discharge resumed within a few minutes. That small fix saved me from calling support and reminded me that energy management software matters as much as battery chemistry.
Overall, I am happiest with the automatic savings. I rarely think about the system now; I just check state of charge before a storm and watch solar production cover more of our demand.
