Solution Solar Inverter
I installed a small solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My setup has six rooftop panels, a 10 kWh lithium battery, and a victron energy multiplus inverter-charger. I am not chasing energy independence; I wanted a practical way to use more of my own solar power after work.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the inverter and battery in the garage, then spent most of the afternoon checking cable sizes, earthing, and the changeover settings. Once everything was commissioned, the app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in one place. That first evening, the battery carried the fridge, lights, router, and cooking appliances without any noticeable interruption.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our electricity meter climbed quickly while dinner was being cooked and everyone charged devices. Now solar fills the battery through the day, and the stored energy covers most of that period. My monthly bill has dropped by roughly 30 percent, although the exact saving varies with cloudy weather and how often we use the clothes dryer. It is especially satisfying watching the battery discharge instead of seeing expensive grid power flow into the house.
I did have one minor scare. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped exporting battery power and displayed a low-temperature warning, even though the garage did not feel cold. I restarted the system and checked the battery sensor connection; the warning cleared, and support later confirmed it was a temporary reading issue. Since then, I check the monitoring app every few days rather than obsessively.
After several months, my solar battery has become boring. It quietly reduces peak-hour usage and provides useful energy after sunset.
