Every 6 p.m., my house used to become the most expensive place to live. Our utility's peak rate started then, right when we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and charged our vehicle. After installing a 13.5-kWh home battery beside the solar inverter, I changed that routine completely.

The installer finished in one day, although I had to clear a narrow path through the garage and move some shelves. The battery itself is surprisingly quiet; I hear a faint hum only when it is charging hard.

What mattered most was the app setting. I selected “self-consumption” and set the battery to discharge from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. On sunny days, rooftop solar fills it by late afternoon; on cloudy days, it reaches roughly 70 percent, which is still enough to cover our evening basics.

Before the battery, our monthly bill averaged $185 during summer. Afterward, it fell to between $96 and $115, even though our overall electricity use barely changed. The biggest difference is avoiding those expensive peak hours: the battery runs the induction cooktop, refrigerator, lights, and vehicle charger while the grid meter stays almost flat. I am not pretending the battery erased our bill—our fixed connection fee and winter heating remain—but saving about $70 to $90 a month feels tangible.

I did have one small scare. One morning the app showed the battery at 2 percent even though the forecast was sunny. I checked the breaker, found it had tripped after a brief outage, and reset it. The system restarted within a few minutes and solar charging resumed. Since then, I keep the notification alerts on and glance at the state of charge before leaving for work.

For me, reliability and predictable peak-hour savings make solar storage worth the upfront cost, more than a promise of energy independence.
